The more we bathe, the more it smells. The truth about short-haired breeds.

A short-haired dog does not mean careless

Why skin is the key to cleanliness, smell and comfort for these breeds

Many owners of short-haired breeds believe that grooming is easier. No long fur, no tangles, no need for conditioner. In fact, this approach leads to the most common problems with odor, itching, and skin irritation in short-haired dogs.

In breeds like the Beagle, French Bulldog, Doberman, Boxer, Dalmatian, American Staffordshire Terrier, and others with similar coat types, the problems don't lie in the hair. They start in the skin.

How a dog's skin is structured

A dog's skin is an active organ, not just an outer covering. It is made up of several layers and contains oil glands, hair follicles, nerve endings and blood vessels. The oil glands produce sebum, a natural protective oily layer that protects the skin from drying out, bacteria and external irritants.

When this layer is in balance, the skin is calm and odor is minimal. When the balance is disrupted, the skin begins to compensate.

What is the specificity of short-haired breeds?

In short-haired breeds, the coat does not retain sebum. It reaches directly to the surface of the skin. Powder sticks more easily, and any dryness or irritation is felt much faster.

This means that care mistakes become apparent almost immediately. The smell appears earlier, the skin reacts more strongly, and itching often begins for no apparent reason.

Why do owners think conditioner is not necessary?

One of the most common misconceptions is that conditioner is only for detangling. With short hair, there is nothing to tangle, so conditioner is perceived as an unnecessary step.

In reality, conditioner doesn't work for the length of the hair. It works for the skin. After shampooing, the protective lipid layer is partially washed away. If it is not restored, the skin is left without protection and begins to produce more sebum to compensate.

This is where the vicious circle begins.

Why bathing more often with just shampoo makes the situation worse

When a dog is bathed with shampoo alone, the skin is cleaned but left without a protective layer. The body responds by activating the sebaceous glands. Sebum increases, the odor returns more quickly, and the owner decides that the dog needs to be bathed even more often.

The more often this cycle is repeated, the stronger the smell becomes.

Why cleaning with a damp cloth doesn't solve the problem

A damp cloth creates a feeling of cleanliness, but it doesn't actually remove sebum. It spreads dust across the skin and creates mechanical friction. The skin is stressed without restoring balance.

The smell doesn't go away, and the skin becomes exhausted.

What are the real consequences?

Over time, this leads to a series of problems. People start to distance themselves from the dog because it smells. The dog senses this and often starts scratching on a psychological basis. Scratching leads to microcracks in the skin barrier. Bacteria and fungi enter through them. Real skin problems appear that are no longer cosmetic and are difficult to treat.

The right approach is a system, not a single product

First step

Shampoo for skin and sebum
T-Limonene Shampoo
https://superdogs.bg/collections/shampoani/products/h-project-line-t-limonene-1

This shampoo gently cleanses, regulates sebum and reduces unpleasant odor without stripping the skin. It is suitable for sensitive skin and prone to oiliness.

Second step

Shampoo for color and visual clarity
White Bright Shampoo

Maintains the coat's natural color and fresh appearance without aggressive bleaching. Suitable for white, black and light short-haired breeds, it helps keep the coat looking clean for longer.

Third step

Balancing and restoring conditioner
Elixir Conditioner

Conditioner restores the skin barrier after shampooing, regulates sebum and significantly reduces the recurrence of odor. This is the key step that closes the bath properly.

Fourth step

Post-bath care
Flore Silk Coat Lotion

The after-bath product maintains the hydrolipidic balance, protects the skin between baths and prolongs the effect of washing. It is used without rinsing and is suitable for daily maintenance.

What is the result of proper care?

With a built-in system, the result is different. The smell appears less frequently and is weaker. The skin is calm. Itching decreases. The dog feels more comfortable, and the contact with the owner is closer.

Shorthair fur doesn't require less care. It does require proper care.
