Calm dog, smart friend

The brain eats too – why a balanced diet is the key to balanced behavior

Food isn't just fuel—it's the heart of health. And when it comes to your dog's brain and psyche, the right diet can make a huge difference—from concentration and learning, to calmness, socialization, and overall behavior.

1. The brain needs building blocks

DHA (Docosahexaenoic acid) – builds brain tissue, improves concentration and learning ability, calms the nervous system.
EPA (Eicosapentaenoic acid) – has anti-inflammatory effects, supports joints and skin, and relieves chronic stress.
ALA (Alpha-linolenic acid) – a plant source that the body partially converts into DHA and EPA.
Sources: fish oil, krill oil, algae oil, flaxseed.

Amino acids:

  • Tryptophan → serotonin – the hormone of calm
  • Tyrosine → dopamine and norepinephrine – motivation, focus, stress control
  • Glutamine → balances brain excitability

What are neurotransmitters?

Brain cells "talk" to each other through chemicals called neurotransmitters:

  • Serotonin – brings calmness and stability
  • Dopamine – brings joy, curiosity and a desire to play
  • Norepinephrine – activates attention and stress response

B vitamins:

  • Participate in the production of serotonin and dopamine
  • Protects against cognitive decline in older dogs

Minerals:

  • Magnesium – anti-stress effect
  • Zinc – regulates mood, supports the immune system
  • Selenium – protects the brain from aging

2. Omega fatty acids and their types

Type Name Main benefit Sources
Omega-3 DHA Brain, psyche, vision Fish oil, algae

EPA Inflammation, joints, skin Fish oil

ALA Converts to EPA/DHA Flaxseed, whose
Omega-6 LA Leather, fur Vegetable oils

GLA Anti-inflammatory Evening primrose

AA Development, immunity Animal fats
Omega-9 Oleinova Heart, hormones Olive oil, avocado

3. The ratio of omega-3 to omega-6 fatty acids – why is it critically important?

Optimal ratio: between 1:1 and 1:5

  • Supports brain function and emotional resilience
  • Protects against inflammation and skin problems

Excessive omega-6 (1:15 and up):

  • Increases inflammatory processes
  • Associated with anxiety, hyperactivity, and behavioral problems

Example from a label: Omega-3: 0.4%, Omega-6: 2.0% → Ratio 1:5 → Good!

4. Powering the Aging Brain

  • Forgetting
  • Disorientation
  • Loss of habits

Helps: antioxidants (vit. A, C, E), omega-3 fatty acids, protein

  • Slow down aging
  • Improves sleep
  • Maintain interest in the surrounding environment

5. Macronutrients and brain function

Proteins:

  • Source of amino acids – they build neurotransmitters
  • Supports training and recovery

Fats:

  • They build the brain
  • Helps absorb vitamins A, D, E, K

Carbohydrates:

  • They give energy
  • Useful with the right sources (sweet potatoes, peas)
